DHA is plant sourced from either glycerin which is found in a number of vegetable oils, or sugar cane, or sugar beets. Is it safe? DHA is considered the safest self-tanning ingredient because it does not enter the skin’s epidermis (outer layer), which means that the tanning effect does not damage the skin, is non-toxic and is perfect for people with sensitive skins. How does DHA work? This colourless sugar undergoes a natural reaction with the skin’s amino acids, producing a skin darkening effect that can vary from brown to yellow depending on the individuals amino acids as well as quantity of the active ingredient applied. How long does it last? A change to colour should be noticeable within a couple of hours of application, but may take up to 24 hours to develop the colour properly. The skin darkens only on the epidermis, so the lifespan of the colour depends both on the individual and the natural shedding of skin cells. Colour should last for approx. 3-4 days with a 1-2 applications.
